China applies to UN for Confucius Prize

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-29 13:39:01

Chinanews, Sept. 28 - Today is the 2556th birthday of Confucius, great
ancient Chinese thinker, statesman, educator, and founder of
Confucianism. Memorial ceremonies for Confucius are being held throughout
the world. Sources from Confucius's birthplace Shandong's Qufu City said
that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) is expected to set up "Confucius Prize," which will be the first
international top-class prize named after a Chinese.
"Provided everything goes smoothly, the application will be approved
within the next two years," said Zhang Mingzhe, deputy director of the
International Communication Office of the Publicity Department of Qufu
Municipal Committee of CPC, yesterday.
The memorial ceremony for Confucius to be held today will further boost
the establishment of Confucius Prize, which aims to award people who have
made remarkable contributions to education, culture and philosophy. The
prize will be awarded once a year and emphasize on one theme ever year.
The reigning winner or the winner's representative can go to Qufu to
attend the international conference relating to the theme for the year on
Sept. 28 (Confucius's birthday). The organizing committee of the
Confucius Festival will invite successful people of all walks of life in
the whole world to recommend their teachers who have imposed profound
influence in their lives.
The Confucius Prize will initially apply for about US$150,000 funds that
will be offered by Shandong Tourism Administration. Qufu Municipal
Government promised to the UNESCO to provide US$150,000 fund each year.
"The Confucius Prize will have great meaning to China, like the Nobel
Prize to Sweden," said Qi Jingjiang, director of the academic research
department of Qufu Confucius Research Institute.

On Sept.6th, experts on cultural relics examined and investigated the
ancient tomb of the Ming Dynasty (1368AD--1644AD) located in the Ant
Mountain in Hanpu. Experts from Changsha Archeology Research Institute
and provincial and municipal cultural relics bureau commenced an
archeological excavation to the ancient tomb of the Ming Dynasty located
in the Ant Mountain in Wangcheng County's Hanpu. It was learned that the
chambers of the tomb are in formal and restrained layout and the
gravestones, which are of the similar size, are about 4.5cm long and 30cm
wide. The gravestones are inscribed with characters in the style of
Xiaozhuan (an ancient style of calligraphy). Experts estimated that the
owner of this tomb may be a royal member in the late Ming Dynasty.

Recently, two over 40 square meter frescos of the Qing Dynasty
(1616-1911AD) were discovered in a temple on top of a mountain far away
from villages of Shaaxi Province's Feng County which is located in deep
Qinling Mountains. The frescos used painting techniques to depict classic
stories of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and are very rare fine works
ever found at present.

$90 billion trade surplus in 2005: Govt

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-29 17:10:44

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com/Bloomberg)

Oct. 29 - China's trade surplus will probably widen to $90 billion this
year from $32 billion in 2004 because of surging exports from the world's
biggest maker of mobile phones, clothes and steel, the Ministry of
Commerce said.
Exports are likely to rise 20 percent this year to $745 billion,
outpacing an expected 18 percent gain in imports to $655 billion,
according to a research report commissioned by the ministry.
China's trade surplus for the first nine months of the year was $68.33
billion, compared with $3.99 billion in the same period last year.
Exports in the first nine months rose 31.3 percent to $546.42 billion.
Imports grew 16 percent to $478.09 billion, the customs bureau said
earlier this month.
China's swelling trade surplus has led to trade tensions as countries
around the world impose quotas and tariffs on Chinese- made goods now
flooding their markets.
Lawmakers, manufacturers and officials in the U.S., which buys more
Chinese-made goods than any other country, say China's currency policies
contribute to the record U.S. trade deficit by holding down the exchange
rate, making it cheaper for Americans to import Chinese goods than to buy
from factories at home.
China on July 21 allowed its currency to appreciate for the first time in
a decade, revaluing the yuan by 2.1 percent against the dollar and
replacing the pegged exchange rate with a link to a basket of currencies.
Since the revaluation, the yuan has gained less than 0.3 percent against
the dollar.
For 2006, total trade volume may increase about 15 percent to $1.61
trillion, from an expected $1.4 trillion in 2005. The nation's economic
growth may slow to about 8 percent next year after expanding at more than
9 percent for two straight years, the report said.

Chinese Academy of Social Science held in Beijing the large-scale special
architectural function & scientific significance seminar about relic of
Taosi ancient town in Xiangfen County on Oct. 24. Astronomers and
historians generally agreed that the big special architectural function
discovered in Taosi town used to relate to astronomical observation and
was the astronomical observation site in Taosi Civilization period
(2500BC to 2000BC). It was learnt this was first time for China to
discover the relic, and the most amazing discovery was the large-scale
rammed earth construction in the sacrifice section with a total area of
1,400 square meters. To date, it is the earliest solid astronomical
observation site ever found in China.

Homegrown 3G standard gears up

(Photo: thebeijingnews.com)

BEIJING, Oct. 22 - Mobile phones based on the Chinese home-grown 3G
(third generation) mobile communications standard, TD-SCDMA, are expected
to be commercialized by the end of next year, a major industry figure
said.
There were some breakthroughs in the development of TD-SCDMA mobile
phones in the past year, according to Yang Hua, secretary-general of
TD-SCDMA Industrial Alliance.
Yet, commercialization of such mobile phones is still lagging behind the
commercialization of network equipment.
"A year ago, we only saw 'samples' of such mobile phones," said Yang.
But at the ongoing PT/Expo Comm China 2005, a major telecoms show, 14
mobile phone makers including Samsung are displaying such mobile phone
models, an indication that the commercialization of TD-SCDMA mobile
phones is picking up speed, he said.
Mobile phone and chip makers need to make substantial efforts to improve
their TD-SCDMA phones, in areas such as stand-by time, Yang noted.
The development of the phones themselves is crucial to the success of 3G
telephony.
In comparison, TD-SCDMA network equipment is already for commercial
roll-out.
TD Tech Ltd, a joint venture between Siemens and Huawei, has already
launched a full set of commercial TD-SCDMA network products and displayed
them at the PT/Expo Comm China 2005.
Yang expected more and more commercial TD-SCDMA network equipment to be
launched on a large scale.
TD Tech Chief Executive Officer Steven Yeo said TD-SCDMA will be a great
success as the development of chips and mobile phones is catching up
rapidly, and the recently opened Open-Lab of TD Tech, which enables
mobile phone makers to test TD-SCDMA handsets, is speeding up the
development and maturity of the phones.
"The homegrown standard will create a big opportunity for China's
telecoms industry due to the technical advantages of the standard itself
as well as strong backing from the government," he said.
"We must ensure the standard success in China, and then we will be able
to promote the standard worldwide."
