RBS to buy 15% of BOC

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-27 15:28:06

(Agencies)

July 27 - Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the second-biggest British bank,
will buy as much as a 15 percent stake in Bank of China (BOC) for up to
five billion US dollars, a press report said.
The two banks are close to an agreement on a deal that could set a record
for the largest ever single foreign direct investment in China, the South
China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed market sources.
The newspaper said Zhu Min, a BOC assistant president with responsibility
for restructuring and listing, visited RBS's Edinburgh headquarters last
week.
China's second-largest lender hopes to sell RBS a 10 to 15 percent stake
by early next month after drawing criticism back home for moving too
slowly on finding a foreign partner to bolster its reform and
restructuring efforts ahead of a planned stockmarket listing.
"BOC is under a lot of pressure right now," one unidentified banker was
quoted as saying. "(It was) the first of the major Chinese banks to boast
publicly of talks with potential foreign strategic investors."
The newspaper said RBS had signed a non-binding memorandum of
understanding to take a 15 percent stake in BOC.
BOC and RBS officials either declined comment or said they were unaware
of the deal's imminent conclusion.
According to the daily, BOC is also in talks to sell much smaller equity
interests to two additional financial investors. The bank has said it
will limit its foreign strategic investors' combined stake to 20 percent
initially.
Last month, Bank of America paid 2.5 billion dollars for a nine percent
stake in China Construction Bank (CCB), also being groomed for a public
sale.
In 2003, the central government selected BOC and CCB to pilot financial
restructuring and corporate governance reforms at the Big Four state
banks, which also include Agricultural Bank of China and Industrial and
Commercial Bank of China (ICBC).

Beijing's registered population reaches 11.706 mln

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-23 20:26:41

(Source: People's Daily)

Beijing's permanent registered population reached 11.706 million and the
total population of Beijing was expected to keep around 18 million by
2020.

July 23 - In the first half of this year, Beijing's population continued
to grow and its permanent registered population reached 11.706 million,
an increase of 2 per cent over the same period of last year and higher
than 1.5 per cent of the control goal set for this year, said Ding
Xiangyang, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission for Development
and Reform Thursday.
Ding deliver a report at the standing committee of the city's National
People's Congress on the implementation of the 2005 Beijing National
Economic and Social Development Plan for the first six months of this
year, according to Beijing Times.
Yin Zhigang, director of Beijing Population Research Institute, said
outsiders contribute the most to the population increase during an
interview with reporters. Around 1994, the growth rate of immigrant
population from other places was kept very low. However, in the recent
several years, the number of immigrants increased sharply.
The director said by 2020, the total population of Beijing would be kept
around 18 million, including 13.5 million permanent residents. In coming
years, the annual growth rate of registered population will be kept under
1.5 per cent, which will not be allowed to break through, as it is the
city's utmost bearing capacity. Accordingly, the control of population
growth will be an imminent task.

Chinanews, Beijing, July 21 (By Liu Yuying) - The performance of China's
independently-developed TD-SCDMA network is able to meet the
international standards of the third generation (3G) mobile technology.
It is capable of setting up large-scale independent networks and its

Chinese economy to maintain steady growth

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-20 13:46:53

Chinanews, July 20 - Zheng Jingping, spokesman for the National Bureau of
Statistics (NBS) and director-general of the NBS Department of
Comprehensive Statistics said during a public function that this year,
China's economy can maintain steady and relatively fast growth.
Zheng made these remarks at the press conference held by the Information
Office of the State Council to introduce China's economic statistics and
economic operating conditions during the first half of this year. He
said, looking at the second half of the year, as long as the various
macro control policies set by the Central government continue to be
implemented in their entirety, and economic systemic reforms continued to
be pushed forward forcefully, and overall economic structure is
reorganized and the growth method transition continues apace, the economy
should continue to maintain its steady and relatively fast growth for the
year.
At the same time Zheng said that in the first half, China's economic
operations continue towards the direction of macro controls and the
overall situation is favorable. Problems still remaining from the
economic operations are principally the difficulty of increasing rural
incomes and the still relatively large scale investment in fixed assets,
not to mention its unreasonable composition. Some industries have
business results that are inferior to last year; and the supply of coal,
power, oil and transport remain tight.

PetroChina output up in 1st 6 months

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, July 16 - Soaring energy demand in China has driven PetroChina's
crude output up 2 per cent, and gas up 23.4 per cent in the first six
months year-on-year.
The country's largest oil and gas producer yielded the equivalent of 481
million barrels of oil and gas during the first half of the year, an
increase of 5.3 per cent from a year earlier, PetroChina said on Friday
in a statement on its web site.
Its crude oil production reached 396 million barrels from January to
June, an increase of 8.1 million barrels on the same period last year.
On the gas front, the company said, solid domestic demand as well as
enhanced pipeline facilities have pushed PetroChina's gas turnover up
23.4 per cent, or 96 billion cubic feet, to top 506.3 billion cubic feet
for the first six months.

Sandstorms sweep across Beijing in spring

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-27 18:12:19

Chinanews, Apr. 27 CA large amount of sands, weighing to the tune of
several hundred thousand tons in all, were floating in the sky over
Beijing several days ago and covering the city with a pall of yellow
mist. Such sandstorm is expected to come again to the city around
Thursday, according to the forecast made by the Beijing municipal
meteorological bureau.
A sandstorm tested its strength in the city nine days ago when local
citizens woke up in the morning just to find that the whole city was
shrouded in yellow mist. It is estimated that about 300,000 tons of sands
fell in Beijing on that day, with every citizen receiving 20 kilos of
sand on average.
More and more people have begun to suffer from respiratory illness in
such sandy weather, and it is estimated that local hospitals have
received 40% more patients than usual. A vice mayor of Beijing, who is
usually mild-tempered, shouted at his subordinates, blaming them for not
doing a good job in overseeing the construction sites.
Meteorological experts said the sandstorm that hit Beijing on April 17
was the worst one in the past three years. The sandstorm blew from the
mid-western part of Inner Mongolia and swept across ten provinces and
municipalities nationwide including the capital city Beijing, affecting
the daily lives of more than 200 million people.
According to an official at the State Forestry Administration, China's
northern region contain large areas of desert lands, and as forests in
these areas continue to decrease year by year, desert lands have extended
and become the new source for sandstorms. At some places, the sand can
reach Beijing within a day.
Local people made jokes about the sandstorms in Beijing. Some said the
sand had caused a shortage of construction material for the city, and
others suggested that the local meteorological bureau forecast the
weather based on how much sand would fall the next day.
While most of the time people cannot control the outbreak of sandstorms,
experts said, we definitely can control the sand that is left on the
ground. In future, people should plan their activities by taking into
account the bearing capability of water and land resources, and control
desertification rate according to nature's rules. On the whole, we cannot
pit human beings against nature.
If we cannot improve the ground condition, more severe sandstorms are
expected to hit Beijing and China's northern region in spring over the
next decade, an expert warned.
